In 2009, Safe to Talk founder Pam Hayes was selling various services to schools across the country. Regardless of the part of the country she was in, she noticed a disturbing and consistent pattern that superintendents and principals shared. Student violence was up. Drug use continued to increase. Bullying was becoming rampant. Suicides were climbing. Being the first to know about these incidents and despite a desire to help, fellow students felt powerless to have an impact. Compound that with shrinking school budgets and she felt inspired to no longer just verbally offer sympathies, but to do something about it.
As a result, Pam created the Safe to Talk Foundation. It’s goal was to reduce violent and dangerous behaviors by empowering students with the training, tools, and resources needed to safely speak out against dangerous behaviors. With school budgets being reduced across the country, Safe to Talk’s mission is more critical than ever. Despite increases in bullying, drugs, violence, and suicides, Pam believes with gracious donors and sponsors, schools can slow down or even reverse this trend. Safe to Talk has partnered with leaders in the industry that provides tools, systems, and training to empower students and raise student awareness. As well as partnered with prominent Associations and Affiliations to aid in the cause, schools can have the resources needed to create a safer and more constructive environment.
